September 27, 28, & 29

This is my last week at Tom Baines School as I have accepted the Assistant Principal position at Hawkwood School. I am excited for the many new challenges and will definately miss all of the staff, students and parents at Tom Baines School. My last seven years here has been amazing and I have gained so much from everyone. Thank you.

Mr. Hogg began today and will be replacing me on Monday, October 3. He is currently getting to know the room and the learning that has occurred here for the last few years. It is a great opportunity for the students to meet and work with him before he takes over the class.

Sincerely,

Mr. Jeremy Lang

September 21, 22, & 26

In some of the classes we explored the concept of empathy in design by exploring ways that mazes could be created for people with different disabilities or in different situations. The students were also asked to consider the 6 Principles of Design below, which come from the design firm IDEO, when they are designing and creating.

  • Transparent: Complex problems require simple, clear and honest solutions.
  • Inspiring: Successful solutions will move people by satisfying their needs giving meaning to their lives, and raising their hopes and expectations.
  • Transformational: Exceptional problems demand exceptional solutions that may be radical and even disruptive.
  • Participatory: Effective solutions will be collaborative, inclusive and developed with the people who will use them.
  • Contextual: No solution should be developed or delivered in isolation but should instead recognize the social, physical and information systems it is part of.
  • Sustainable: Every solution needs to be robust, responsible and designed with regard to its long-term impact on the environment and society.

Please remember to have your course outlines signed and returned or an email sent to me telling me that they have been seen.

Welcome to Construction & Design

It has been a great start to the year and I am excited by all of th cool things that will be happening in the Construction & Design Studio. I spent some time over the summer upgrading equipment in the room and reorganizing to better reflect the feedback I received from students from last year. I will also be changing the approach to the course as a result.

Life Skills 9-29

For next class, Wednesday, June 15 please feel free to bring snacks as we will be having a celebration of the year. Also, if possible before next class please fill out this questionnaire about Life Skills as it should only take 5 to 10 minutes. If you don’t do this before Life Skills then you will need to do this on June 15.

Crunch Time

We are in our last three weeks of official classes before exams and there is still a great deal of work to get done.

Construction and Design

  • We have only 4 remaining classes of Construction and Design. Unfortunately we are about 3 to 5 classes behind where I would like to be this semester as it took many students much longer to complete their assignments prior to starting their independent projects.
  • In order to provide a thorough assessment of the students based on the four outcomes (explore and design; create; appraise; and communicate) I am requesting that work be handed in on the dates below:
    • Independent Project Explore /  Plan / Design – This is all of the work you did for your independent projects before starting to build or create it.
      • A Block Thursday, June 2
      • B Block – Friday, June 3
      • C Block Monday, June 6
    • Collecting Evidence of Learning – This is your daily reflection, your final entry based on your goal, and the signed checklist. This is all to be handed in even if your project is not yet completed.
      • A BlockFriday, June 10
      • B Block Monday, June 13
      • C BlockTuesday, June 14
  • Please remember when sharing files with me on the computer you must name the file properly (Name – Block – What it is)
    • ex. Jeremy Lang – 7C – Independent Project Plan   or   Jeremy Lang – 8A – Collecting Evidence.

May 18, 19, & 24

Construction & Design 7, 8, & 9

  • Everyone is now either planning their independent project or have started to build it. As always some really cool project ideas and I can’t wait to see the progress that we make.
  • Please remember that you must collect evidence of your learning every class and that you need to be documenting this so that it can be shared.
  • Remember that you are welcome to come into the room to work whenever the lights are on as I generally am at the school by 7:50am and stay until at least 4:30. When possible the room is also open at lunch.

Life Skills 9-29

  • We are continuing to explore Human Sexuality by examining different STIs. Students that were at school selected and began putting together a brief (no longer than 2 minute) presentation (June 1) that includes the following:
    • What is it
    • How you can get it / how it is spread
    • Symptoms (including real photographs when possible)
    • How is it treated
    • Is it curable
    • Short and long term effects
  • Here is the link to the websites that I provided for you.
  • These are the STIs that were selected. If you were away please find a partner and come and talk to me so that you can select an STI to examine as there are others that are not on this list.
    • Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) – Xudong & Junchen
    • Chancroid – Annie & Karina
    • Chlamydia – Christina & Safiya
    • Gonorrhea – Robin & Senyun
    • Hepatitis – Fariazh & Ana
    • Herpes – Mateo & Levi
    • HIV/AIDS – Yung-Sheng & Jin
    • Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and Genital Warts – Ben & Jeevan
    • Lymphoganuloma Venereum (LGV) – Linda & Monique
    • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) – Liam & Jared
    • Pubic Lice (Crabs) – Gary & Eric
    • Scabies – Fabrizio & Lily
    • Syphilis – Megan & Kaden
    • Trichomoniasis – Ying Qi & Cheryl
    • Yeast Infection – Molly & Michelle
  • If any part of your presentation is done on the computer please share it with me in Google Drive before the start of class.

Only 10 Classes Left

Wow has this semester gone by quickly. We only have 10 classes left. Though this might not seem like that many it is actually approximately 1/3 of the total number of classes.

I have been working hard with the students to represent their learning at a level that is acceptable based on their grade level. At this point in the year they are close to being Grade 8, 9, & 10 students. As a result, students have been improving their work to demonstrate a mastery level before being able to move on to other things.

Grade 7

  • Students have had a brief introduction to some of the larger wood and metal working equipment and they have been given a small piece of wood and metal and asked to do the following:
    • Wood – Cut, sand, and drill
    • Metal – Cut, bend, punch, and rivet

Grade 8

  • Some students are just finishing the working model / prototype project whereas others have almost completed the planning for their independent projects and will soon begin working on these.

Grade 9

  • Some students have finished the planning of their independent projects and have begun to work on them. I am always amazed with what the students come up with.
