Sept 15 – 18

Handing in Digital Assignments

  • If you are submitting assignment that you did on a computer or other device please share it with me in Google Drive. You must use your CBE Google Account to share it or else I will not receive it. Please name the file with the following format
    • Name – Block – Assignment
    • Ex (Jeremy Lang – 7C – Challenge Reflection)

Grade 7

  • We began looking at the various tools and equipment that we have in the Construction and Design Studio. The students were asked to try and find the following information about the tools and equipment they selected:
    • Where and when did the tool originate?
    • Who invented it?
    • How much does a modern version cost in Canadian dollars?
    • What is it for and how do you use it?
    • Are there different types and if so, what are they?

Grade 8 & 9

  • The students began working through the design thinking process to create a name tag for someone else. If they are new to the program then they were invited to create a name tag representing themselves instead.

First Challenge Reflection

Awesome job with your first challenges. Remember, the reasons we did the challenge was to: have you work with others; start creating using simple supplies and making complex structures; understand that it may take you much longer and it might be much harder to create what you want than you think; and most importantly to realise that things don’t always turn out but it is through our failures that we learn best.

Please reflect on this challenge by demonstrating your understanding of the questions below. You decide how you can best do this. Some possible suggestions are recording your voice, writing it down, creating an online presentation, making a comic, or writing a poem. The way you demonstrate your understanding is not as important as what you demonstrate.

  1. Why did you creation not work as well as you wanted it to or as well as it could have?
  2. What did other people do differently than you that worked?
  3. How would you change yours if you were to have the same challenge?
  4. When could you use what you have learned by participating in this challenge

You will have time next class to working on your reflection and then it will be due the following class.

  • A Block – Due Monday, September 21
  • B Block – Due Tuesday, September 22
  • C Block – Due Wednesday, September 23

9-29 Class Name

Thank you to those of you that stepped up to come up with our “sign,” poster, and outfit. Please remember to let everyone in the class know so that we are good to go for the Pep Rally on Wednesday, September 16.

Next class we are going to continue with the “What can I do to make ____ better” activity.

Construction and Design

We are starting to work on a challenge to get us thinking about design and problem solving.

Each grade has a different challenge. Below are the supplies that each grade gets in order to solve their challenge:

What an Awesome Homeroom

I am super excited to have 9-29 as my homeroom this year. Everyone has been respectful, helpful, and just plain awesome.

  • Please have all of your forms in by Friday, September 4. Give them to Mr. Morgan if you cannot find me
  • For next class, Wednesday, Sept 9
    • Think of ways of incorporating our class name Wu-Lang Clan into logo, mascots, songs, and other ways we can be awesome.
    • Please come up with as many ideas regarding: what can I do to make me better; what can I do to make Tom Baines better; and what can I do to make us better. We will be using this for the next activity.

I am not longer accepting work.

The students have had close to a month of reminders to be able to get their work in so that it can be evaluated to reflect their level of learning in their designing, creating, appraising, and communicating with respect to their challenge.

Construction & Design

We have very few classes left and it is incredibly important that everyone is keeping up with their work. I require your planning / design work and also your project reflections before:

  • A Block – Friday, June 12
  • B Block – Monday, June 15
  • C Block – Tuesday, June 16

I am going to begin interviewing each of you about your learning on the dates above and I need your design plan and project reflection to help do this. Generally this will take two classes to complete. As I will be busy interviewing students I will be unable to supervise on the larger equipment so please consider this in the planning of your projects.

The interview is causal as I try to see your side of your learning and to get your point of view with respect to the progress you have made. I am going to be asking about the four outcomes in this class designing, creating, appraising, and communicating. Below is some information that might help you prepare or at least think about what you would like to share:

  • I am going to ask you about each of the four outcomes and what level (E, P, S, ED) you believe your learning is at for each and why. Please try to keep your response precise.
  • Design – How did your design / plan help you with creating your project? Did you include everything that you were supposed to (why, what, questions, how, Sketch with measurements, and tools & material list)?
  • Create – What are you most proud of / disappointed with? How do you think it turned out over all? Did you challenge yourself with your project?
  • Appraise – What changes did you make to your project while you worked on it? What was easy for you and what was difficult? Were you able to problem solve and troubleshoot?
  • Communicate – What did you learn about creating, tools and equipment, and most importantly, yourself? Did you show growth throughout the term?

Life Skills 9-23 – STI Presentations

You are being asked to create a presentation, with a partner, that is between 2 & 4 minutes long (keep it to the point). You are being asked to include the following:

  • What is the STI
  • How can you get it / causes
  • What it looks like (include image even if graphic)
  • Symptoms
  • How to treat it / is it curable?
  • Complications short term and long term.

You will be given time next Life Skills class to work on this and you will be presenting on Wednesday, May 27. If you forgot the STI that you will be examining then we can go over this again next class.
