Wedensday April 20

I would just like to remind everyone that I tend to only update the homework blog when items are assigned or news is to be shared.

Report cards went home today. However, it is my understanding that a number of my comments did not show up. If this is the case please let me know and we will have the report card reprinted.

I would also like to remind parents, and students, but mostly parents, that school is about learning not about marks. Some students marks have gone down but this does not mean that they have not progressed in regards to their learning. Often the marks reflect whether or not the students have handed in assignments, understood the expectations on assignments, or how much of a topic they have memorized and regurgitated. None of this necessarily reflects their learning and their true understanding of the curricular outcomes.

I have told my students that if they are within 5% of their last term mark then this does necessarily reflect an improvement or deterioration of their learning. Instead I encourage all of you to focus on your child’s effort and their desire and enthusiasm to learn. I would also like to remind all of you that 65% is still an average mark and at this level your child is showing that they have completed enough work to show an acceptable understanding of the outcomes.

If you have any concerns I encourage you to please make an appointment with me to discuss your child’s learning instead of being disappointed in your child. We all do the best we can and there may be reasons for a drastic increase, decrease, or no change at all in your child’s score.

Sincerely,

Mr. Lang

  • Excellent job today on your research. I was impressed by how focused all of you were and by the depth that some of you are going to do your research.
  • For Thursday please have the basic idea of your Short Story together, and also the character questions for your main character.

9-29

  • Please ask for clarification or assistance during the Dragons’ Den project. It is very involved so please make sure that you are taking the time to think about what you are doing. Also, the suggested readings will definitely help you out in understanding how to approach some of the sections of the business plan.

Monday April 11

Marks for term three have been updated online so please take a look so that there are no surprises.

7-01 & 7-07

  • You should be finished or close to finishing your research by Wednesday April 13. The rest of this week and three days next week will be given for you to work on putting the sharing of the information together. The following week is integration week and I will be away on the Grade 9 trips. Therefore, we will begin sharing our information on Monday May 2 so please make sure you are ready to go for this day.
  • Continue to think about your short stories as we will continue working on them tomorrow.

9-29

  • Bring home your Immigration Trunk Projects please. I asked you to take them home before Spring break and there are still six or seven of them in the class.
  • It looks like many of you have some great ideas for the Dragons’ Den project. Yes, there is a lot of work to do so you need to make sure that you are using your class time wisely and also working on it at home too.

Monday April 4

The last day I will collect any assignments that are late will be Thursday April 7. Just as a reminder, the third term ends mid next week and that means that we only have about two months left of school after this.

There will be an early dismissal this Wednesday for the Grade 6 orientation. Please not that the date in the agenda states that this will occur next Thursday but we had to change because of a scheduling conflict. Dismissal will be at 12:15 and there will be no cafeteria services on this day.

On February 28th I put something in all of the online marks to see which students were checking their marks. As of today less than one third of all of my students had checked their marks. I am not sure if this means anything or if I should be concerned but it definitely is interesting since many of my students complain about their marks.

7-01 & 7-07

  • Please remember to bring your books on Mondays and Wednesdays.
  • Come prepared tomorrow with your topic selected for the Semi Self-Directed Study project. If you do not like the suggestions given to you then you may come up with one of your own though please talk to me about this first.

9-29

  • Make sure that you are using your class time effectively to ensure that you are progressing on your Dragons’ Den Project. Deadline for money will be Monday April 11. If you do not contribute and take a risk as an entrepreneur then the Dragons will not be willing to take a risk and invest in you. This means you cannot win money 🙂

Thursday March 31

7-01 & 7-07

  • I know it is Spring Break but Mr. Kuwahara has asked me to remind 7-01 and 7-07 to make sure that you hand in either an electronic or paper copy of your Canadian Women in History project because he is missing a few from 7-01 and almost all of them from 7-07.

9-29

  • Someone in my haste to leave at the end of the day last week I forgot to bring home the Lemonade Stand to finish marking it. I will try and get these updated as quickly as possible once I return.

Hope your break is going well everyone.

Mr. Lang

Friday March 25

  • I believe that I most of you finished your letters and got everything in the envelopes. I sent them out today so now we just have to wait to see if any of you receive responses.
  • Try doing some reading over Spring Break and remember to have your books with you on your first day back Monday, April 4.
