February 26, 27, & 28

Lifeskills 9-21

  • Your Churchill registration forms need to be back to Mr. Jones or me by Monday, March 3.

Robotics 8A

  • Today we continued exploring the wonderful world of HTML. On Monday, March 3 you will have time to ask me any questions that you may have regarding the Intro to HTML tutorials (1-13) and then you will have a quiz on the information covered.

Robotics 8B

  • Wow, super impressed with the work that occurred today even though a number of you were away. We continued to work on the NXT Checklists and many of you had started to work on using the sensors.

Robotics 8C

  • Please make sure that your first sketchup assignment is handed in by midnight. If you forget how to do this please check the last classes post.
  • For the next assignment I have asked you to work on designing and creating something that could be considered useful. The three options I gave you, if you do not want to come up with your own, are creating a cable organization tool for the laptop carts; a device that will hold up a phone or a tablet; or something that will stop you from losing your pen or pencil. You will have more time to work on this next class.

Robotics 9A

  • Yet another short class, so we spent the time trying to finish building our racing robots. On Monday’s class you will have a short amount of time to make any finishing changes and then we will be racing and moving on.
  • Many of you have not finish the Robots in Our World activity. Please make sure you do so soon so that I can assess this.

Robotics 9B

  • I think a number of you were overwhelmed today with what I was asking you to do in Scratch. Please remember that you can also work on Scratch at home as it is web based so it will work on both Mac and PC computers.
  • You will have more time next class so don’t stress too much over this. Remember that you need to ask for help or clarification because it is your learning.

Robotics 9C

  • We spent close to an hour trying to finish our racing robots. The quality of the builds ranged from impressive to something that really did not go anywhere. However, I hope that everyone had a chance to explore some of the parts and also how to build using the Mindstorms. The focus was on design, and the designs did vary a fair amount which was neat to see.
  • For next class please finish the appraisal / reflection for this. I have shared the file with all of you in Google Drive. Please remember that the questions at the bottom of the second page are just there to guide your thoughts.
    • Most of you will likely do this as  a paragraph response but remember feel free to respond to this and share your learning in any way that you like.
  • If you are handing something in digitally then please put it in your Google Drive folder, otherwise bring it to class and hand it in the bin.
    • Your folder should be named as follows (your name – 9B). Remember to create this go into Google Drive, click on “Create” and then “Folder”. Once you have made this please share it with me by right clicking on the folder, and then “Share” You will add my email address, [email protected], under invite, and please give me editing privileges.

February 21, 24, & 25

Robotics 8A

  • Remember that your Program a Human assignment is due tonight by midnight. Please make sure that it is in your Google Drive folder that you have shared with me.
  • The class decided today to support the Olympic Men’s Hockey Team so we ended up going to the gym to watch. As a result the following needs to be completed for next class:
    • Go to Codecademy and sign in using your CBE Google Account.
    • Go to “Learn” and then select “HTML & CSS” and go to “HTML Basic”.
    • Complete the first five activities.
    • If you want to go on feel free to do so or if you are interested in learning another programming language you can do that as well.

Robotics 8B

  • Awesome job today with the races. I hope that you had fun and also learned a few things from this.
  • Please remember to do an appraisal / reflection based on the following: Think about your design. What worked, what didn’t work, what would you change, what worked for others, why were some faster than others. If you would like to do this in Google Drive please remember to put it in the folder that you created.
    • Most of you will likely do this as  a paragraph response but remember feel free to respond to this and share your learning in any way that you like.
    • If you are handing something in digitally then please put it in your Google Drive folder, otherwise bring it to class and hand it in the bin.
      • Your folder should be named as follows (your name – 8B). Remember to create this go into Google Drive, click on “Create” and then “Folder”. Once you have made this please share it with me by right clicking on the folder, and then “Share” You will add my email address, [email protected], under invite, and please give me editing privileges.

Robotics 8C

  • Today you were given time to work on your first assignment which was either to make a copy of an object or else create a personal accessory. Please make sure that this is handed in by Friday, February 28.
    • If you are handing something in digitally then please put it in your Google Drive folder, otherwise bring it to class and hand it in the bin.
      • Your folder should be named as follows (your name – 8C). Remember to create this go into Google Drive, click on “Create” and then “Folder”. Once you have made this please share it with me by right clicking on the folder, and then “Share” You will add my email address, [email protected], under invite, and please give me editing privileges.

Robotics 9A

  • Today we did a quick sort of the parts that we have and started to design and build or racing robots.

Robotics 9B

  • We raced our robots and as expected some did much better than others. I was pleased to see how well the majority of you worked together and what you were able to accomplish.

Once you have made this please share it with me by right clicking on the folder, and then “Share” You will add my email address, [email protected], under invite, and please give me editing privileges.

Robotics 9C

  • We continued building or racer bots and some of you seem much more comfortable building as you are willing to take risk and try things out. Next class you will have some time to finish your robot before we race.

February 18, 19, & 20

Robotics 8A

  • We started our programming module by trying to write a program for a human to do a simple task.
  • Please try and finish this for Friday though you will have some time to finish it off and test it.

Robotics 8B

  • Today, because it was a short class, we worked on finishing our speed bots. You will have a little bit of time next class to finish before we race.

Robotics 8C

  • We began working on our first assignment. Based on feedback from last term I decided to give you a choice for your first assignment. The purpose of this is to start getting you comfortable with the program and the tools available.
    • For the assignment you are to either try to copy/duplicate an item that you brought from home, or design a personal accessory like a ring.

Robotics 9A

  • We are a bit behind the other classes because of all of the disruptions to our class including the Churchill Tour.
  • We finished sorting our robotics components and have started to work on building a racing robot.

Robotics 9B

  • We continued building our racing robots but because the class was short today we did not finish. You will have some time next class to finish before we race.

Robotics 9C

  • Most of the class wanted to go and watch the Gold Medal Women’s Hockey game so we will have to pick up where we left off. However, those that stayed in class worked on their racing bots. Some very different and unique designs.

February 11, 12

Robotics 8B

  • Today we starting exploring the world of the Lego Mindstorms by designing and beginning to build the fastest robot.

Robotics 8C

  • We began looking at Sketchup and started to become familiar with some of the tools available in it.
  • I encourage all of you to finish the tutorials that we began today so that you are ready for next class. Remember that you can download the Sketchup software for free.
  • Please remember to bring an object from home that you would like to try and copy and turn into a 3D design.

Robotics 9

  • Please make sure that you finish off your “Robots in our World” assignment. Remember that you need to find information about three different robots.
  • You spent much of the class getting to know all of the parts that come in the EV3 kits and making sure that everything was there.

February 6, 7, & 10

Robotics 8

  • Today we explored how to work effectively in a group and when being a follower is more effective than being a leader.
  • We also had a brief sample of the four components in the CTF curriculum as we worked to create the tallest structure possible.

Robotics 9

  • We started exploring robots in our world and discussed the difference between a robot and a machine.
  • If your group did not find and report on three different robots then please finish this for next class. Remember that you can access the file through Google Drive.

February 3, 4, & 5

Robotics 8

  • I will end up seeing each class by the end of week and you will soon be finding out which module you will be starting the year with: Coding, 3D Design, or Robotics (Lego Mindstorm NXT) .
  • Here are some of the programs that we discussed in class:

Robotics 8A

  • I am super impressed with the quality of work that I am seeing from a number of you.
  • As soon as you are done your final project please hand it in so that I can start assessing it. However, if you need more time you can use class time on Thursday.
  • Please make sure that you do the survey so that I have feedback on how to improve. Here is the link if you didn’t get to it today.

Robotics 8B

  • Today was a bit of a rush as we worked hard to finish our battle bots or our independent projects. The battle was not as exciting as some of you hoped but next year you may have another chance.
  • Please make sure that you do the survey so that I have feedback on how to improve. Here is the link if you didn’t get to it today.

Robotics 9

  • We will finish Bi-Centenial man next class.
  • I appreciate all of the work that you did and the time you put in to learning something new.
  • Please make sure that you do the survey so that I have feedback on how to improve. Here is the link if you didn’t get to it today.

January 22, 23, & 24

All missing or insufficient assignments that are being redone must be completed and handed in by Wednesday, January 29.

Robotics 8A

  • Continued working on the final programming project using Scratch. Your project is due by the end of class on Monday, January 27.
  • Remember to showcase your best work.

Robotics 8B

  • Next class you will have half of the time to finish your robots and the second half we will have our epic robot battle. Make sure that you are ready to go.
  • If you have not already done so please make sure to hand in your planning/design sheet and also your groups NXT Checklist.

Robotics 9C

  • Wednesday is your last class to work on your final project. It must be handed in by the end of the class. Remember to showcase your best work and make sure to include all of the required elements. However, if you are looking to achieve at the proficient or exemplary level you must go above and beyond this.

Robotics 9

  • Today was your last class to work on your robots. Remember that when you are finished you are to submit a final appraisal of the entire project and put it up on your website.
  • Some of you already started to dismantle your robots and starting sorting out what you have and what is missing.
