January 17, 20, & 21

I have posted a list of all of the students with missing or insufficient assignments on the white board in the class. I also sent all of you an email. My hope is that you will work to improve on your grades and get some of your work handed in. What is troubling, is that some of these assignments are from September and October which tells me that many of you are not checking your online grades.

I apologize for not being at school on Friday but I had some appointments that I had to attend to.

Robotics 8A

  • You should have handed in your “All About Me” project and began working on your final project.
  • Remember to hand in a Scratch project you need to click on “File” from the Scratch program, and then “Download to Computer.” Once you have downloaded the file please upload it to your Google Drive account.
  • You only have 2 classes left so make sure to keep up with your work.

Robotics 8B

  • Today many of you began working on your final project for Robotics. If I remember correctly 5 out of the 6 groups are going to be participating in the robot battle.
  • You will have 1.5 more classes to work on your robots as we will be having the battle/showcase during the second half of the last class.

Robotics 8C

  • There are only two classes left to work on your Final projects. Please see the post from last class for the requirements.
    • Remember that you are to show me your best work so please make sure that you are putting in the time required to do this.
    • If you are finished early then you may work on designing other items.

Robotics 9

  • Please make sure to be updating your website with your appraisal / reflection as I will be assessing them shortly.
    • It is important that any pictures or videos that you have on Google Drive that you are putting on your website are shared so that anyone with the link can see them. If this is not done only the person that owns them can see them. If you have questions please ask.
  • Once your group has completed a project please do a final appraisal that is a reflection of the entire project.
  • From here your group may design / plan a new project that you can work on until the end of the term.
  • We only have 1 more classes left to work on our projects before the end of the term so please stay focused.
  • If you are choosing not to work on Robotics as you are not wanting to start a new project then please bring something else to work on in class.

January 14, 15, & 16

Robotics 8A

  • Today is the last class time I am giving to work on your “All About Me” project. Please try and finish this for next class as it is due on Friday, January 17. If you cannot remember how to hand it in please ask and I will show you.

January 9, 10, & 13

I apologize for missing the first three days of school this year but I was at home with my wife and new son Troy Robert Louis Lang. Please make sure to come and talk to me if you have any questions about what happened while I was away.

I have emailed students, and parents of students, who are missing multiple assignments or who are struggling with their learning in robotics. If this is you I recommend that you come and talk to me as soon as possible so we can figure things out before the end of the term.

Robotics 8A

  • Today you started working on a Scratch assignment that is all about you. The purpose of this is to have you start figuring out some of the tools. Below are the criteria for this. You will be given more time next class and I will also show you how to share it with me.
    • At least 3 things about yourself
    • At least one clickable thing
    • An image of yourself
    • At least one movement
    • At least one custom sprite or background
    • At least one sound
    • Another way of interacting with your presentation

Robotics 8B

  • We continued to work on the NXT Checklist. I was impressed by the troubleshooting that many of you were showing. Keep up the great work.

Robotics 8C

  • Please make sure you hand in your duplicate project as it was due last week. Remember to name your file so that it makes sense and to the upload it to your Google Drive folder that you have shared with me.
  • Today many of you began working on your personal accessory item project. Since there are not many days left you need to decide how much time you can dedicate to this and then also your final project.

Robotics 9

  • Remember that you get out of a class what you put in to it.
  • Please make sure to be updating your website with your appraisal / reflection as I will be assessing them shortly.
  • Once your group has completed a project please do a final appraisal that is a reflection of the entire project.

  • We only have 3 more classes left to work on our projects before the end of the term so please stay focused.

December 16, 17 & 18

This is the last week of school before the winter break. I hope that everyone has a relaxing and safe time.

Robotics 8A

  • We continued learning HTML and completed a basic assessment on a few introductory skills (tutorials 1 – 5).
  • The students were also introduced to X-Ray Goggles (formerly Hackasaurus) to show them how they can learn how websites are made and play around with modifying them.
  • I encouraged you to continue working on learning more HTML code (tutorials 6-13).
  • Next class you will be given one period of class time to finish the tutorials and then another assessment. For those of you that used the website to help you with the first assessment you will struggle with the second one. Remember that we are trying to focus on your learning not on your grades. By cheating you may get a high grade but this does not mean that you have learned.

Robotics 8B

  • We began working on the NXT Checklist to allow you to develop some basic building and programming skills for the robots.
  • Please remember to get the “Fastest Robot” reflection in by the morning of Thursday, December 19. Please the post from last class for the instructions for this.

Robotics 8C

  • The students continued to try to duplicate an object they brought from home to create a digital 3D version of it. You will have time to work on this when you get back from winter break. However, if you think you are behind you may want to do a bit of work on this.
  • Remember that Sketchup is a free program that you can download on PC and Mac platforms.
  • I have also shared the tutorials and videos with you in Google Drive so that you can access them whenever you need to.

Robotics 9

  • Many of you are missing assignments. Please check HomeLogic to see how you are doing and what you need to work on.
  • Remember that you are all in Grade 9 and I am assessing you based on this. I understand that this is a complimentary class but I am expecting you to perform to the best of your ability. If you need help with something or have questions please come and talk to me.
  • If you would like to improve on a grade please come and talk to me so that we can discuss the possibility of redoing it.

December 11, 12, & 13

I apologize as I have been behind in my assessment. I will do my best to have everything updated by the end of this weekend. Thank you for understanding.

Mr. Lang

Lifeskills 9-21

  • We will be doing our presentations on December 18th, and finishing them on the 19th if need be.

Robotics 8A

  • Finished and demonstrated some of the Program a Human instructions.
  • I ask that you sign up for Codecademy using your CBE Google Accounts. By the end of next class you will need to have finished the Basic HTML tutorials 1 – 5. If you are enjoying this then please feel free to continue.

Robotics 8B

  • We raced our robots, and there was some tough competition. We followed this with a discussion about design since we all started with the same program.
  • Please complete a reflection on the “Fastest Robot” project, for next class. In your reflection please think about what you think your group did well, what it needs to work on, and also reflect on your design. What worked, and what didn’t work? What would you do differently next time. Remember that you are in Grade 8 so I am looking for Grade 8 quality work.
  • We have since moved on from here as we began building a new robot so that we can work through some basic skills.

Robotics 8C

  • Today we began working on the Duplicate assignment in which you have to make an accurate, and to scale, 3D copy of an object that you  brought from home. They will not be perfect but the purpose of this is to start working on some of the skills and using some of the tools that will allow you to make complex designs later.
  • You will have more time to complete this at our next class.

Robotics 9

  • Make sure to complete and share your appraisals each class to document your progress.

December 5, 9, 10

Robotics 8A

  • Today we began working on our Program a Human assignment. You will be given more time next class before we test out and demonstrate our programs.

Robotics 8B

  • Started working on our fastest robot project. You will have about 20 minutes next class to finish this before we race. Remember that the focus is on your design as we are all using the same program and the same parts.

Robotics 8C

  • We started to look at the program Sketchup. I asked that everyone makes an effort to finish the four tutorials that I have shared with you. The hope is that you will come to class on Friday with some basic skills and knowledge.
  • Please bring an object from home that you would like to try and create a digital 3D model of.

Robotics 9

  • Continue to work on our individual projects. Some of you are coming up with some creative ways to solve the problems that you are faced with.
  • Remember to do your appraisal for each class by updating your webpage on Google Sites. If you are posting any files/documents from Google Drive then you need to set the Share permissions for it to “Anyone with the Link can view.” If you need help with this please ask.

December 2, 3, & 4

Robotics 8A

  • Today was our last class to work on our robotics challenges. There was some awesome work being done and I was excited to see the robot battle, even though in the end not much really happen. There were also two other ideas, a motion sensor defence, and a bottle pickeruper.
  • Please make sure that your appraisal is finished for next class. If you are doing in Google Drive please just place it in your folder and if you are doing it on paper then please bring it to class.

Robotics 8B

  • Today was our last class to work on your final 3D Design project. Make sure that you have included all of the required elements and skills and that you are showcasing your best work.
  • Please make sure to name the your file appropriately and then put it in your shared Google Drive folder by midnight on Thursday.

Robotics 8C

  • Today was your last class to work on your Scratch game or useful software product. Please makes sure that you are showcasing your best work.
  • Please remember to download the file to your computer and then upload it to your shared Google Drive folder. Please make sure that this is done by Thursday at midnight as I will begin assessing them on Friday.

Robotics 9

  • Remember to do your appraisal for each class by updating your webpage on Google Sites. If you are posting an files/documents from Google Drive then you need to set the Share permissions for it to “Anyone with the Link can view.” If you need help with this please ask.
  • Continued to work on our projects. Many of you are utilizing all of the new parts that you have available to you. Please remember to only take what you need, and need what you take. Also make sure to put the items back in the proper place when you have finished.
  • A number of you have also not yet handed in your first design/plan and it should already have been in. If you are doing a digital copy please make sure that it is in your shared Google Drive folder and if you are doing it on paper then please hand it in to the bin.

November 27, 28, & 29

Robotics 8A

  • You will have one more class after today to finish your robot. If you are planning on competing in the robot battle this will be taking place during the second half of class on Monday, December 2, our last class for robotics.
  • I will be available before and after school most days, for those of you that want some extra time to work on your robots.
  • Make sure that you had in your planning/design sheet so that I can assess it. I also recommended that you keep track of your progress that you will have something to work with when you do your appraisal/reflection.
  • You will be asked to do an appraisal/reflection for your own project so you can get a head start on that if you would like.

Robotics 8B

  • Continued to work on the final showcase of our skills with 3D Design. Look at the post from November 18 to see the list of required skills. This will be due on Tuesday, December 3. You will be given the double period of class time on that day to finish.
  • Remember that if you would like to try designing and printing other items please let me know as there are still opportunities for this even if you have finished the class

Robotics 8C

  • Continued to work on the game or useful program that you are creating as your final showcase of your learning. Remember to show off your skills and impress me. Use the skills that you have gained so far in programming and also the robotics module to do your best work. You will have all of class on Wednesday to finish it.

Robotics 9

  • Please make sure that you are checking Homelogic to see what you have been assessed on and how you are doing. There are a number of people missing assignments.
  • We continued working on designing and building the robots from the ideas that you came up with. There are already some amazing things happening and I am impressed by how well many of you are working together.
  • Remember that each time you come up with a new build you need to go through the design/planning process again. Please ask if you are unsure about something.
