October 11, 15, & 16

LifeSkills 9-21

  • We are giving you one more week to finish of your SMART Goal planning. Please see last weeks post for more information.
  • Today we took the time to write down something Awesome but some of our fellow classmates. We discussed how expressing gratittude can actually make you happier. Next week you will be able to take a look at the sheets and see what other people think is awesome about you.

Robotics 8A

  • We continued working on the final 3D design project. Take a look at the last post to find out everything that you need to include.
  • Remember that class on Thursday, October 17 is the last one in this module.

Robotics 8B

  • We continued working on your game or useful program that you were designing in Scratch.
  • Please make sure that you have shared your All About Me project with me.
  • Remember that class on Friday, October 18 is the last one in this module.

Robotics 8C

  • An awesome day as many of you started to make advancements on your project ideas.
  • Remember that class on Tuesday, October 22 is the last one in this module

Robotics 9

  • I am still the champion of the fastest robot. Hopefully you had fun and learned about the importance of design.
  • We are working on the EV3 checklist so that you can become comfortable with programming the robots and also what some of the capabilities are.

October 8, 9, & 10

Lifeskills 9-21

  • Please complete the SMART Goals sheet for next class. All three should be for the same goal. However, we recommended you start with your 3rd goals as this is the main goal that you are working towards for the end of the school year, June 2014. We then asked you to do your second goal which was a goal, related to your main goal, that would help you achieve your main goal and it would be achieved by the end of the first term, January. Your first goal, which is related to your other two goals, should help you achieve your second goal and it would be achieved by the end of November.  If you have questions please as Jones or me.
  • We are also asking you to get to know your classmates in 9-21 as it will be incredibly important to know more than just their names for next class.

Robotics 8A

  • You should have handed in your duplicate project, and your personal item project by know. You began working on your final project which was to design your ideal classroom, or bedroom. Some of you came up with some other ideas that we talked about on an individual basis. Your project needs to show the proper use of the following tools or skills (you may want to label them in Sketchup):
    • Line tool, Freehand tool, Arc tool, Rectangle tool, Circle tool, Push/Pull tool, Follow Me tool, 3D Text tool, Text tool, Push/Pull an arc, Push/Pull a rectangle, Push/Pull a circle

Robotics 8B

  • Please make sure you have your “All About Me” project finished, and shared with the Tom Baines School Studio in Scratch, by next class.
  • We began working on our final project which was creating a game, or other type of program that would be useful, or valuable, in Scratch.

Robotics 8C

  • Awesome work todays on your robots. Some of you are making great progress and I look forward to seeing what you will be able to put together over the next two classes. Please remember to take a look at the appraise and articulate questions on the back of your planning sheet.

Robotics 9

  • We have finished working with the basics in HTML and you completed your second assessment on this that had you applying the knowledge and skills that you have hopefully learned. Please remember that if you struggled with this then please go back and work on the areas that you to. It is about understanding your work not just forgetting it and moving on.
  • We began working with the EV3 robotics kits as your first task was to create the fastest robot. We will continue this next class.
  • I also asked you to think about the student(s) in the class that you could work with as you will be selecting your groups shortly and you will have them for the majority of the course.

October 3, 4, & 7

Robotics 8A

  • Remember to hand in the 3D design of your personal item. Many of the designs I have aleady looked at show a great deal of effort. However, in order to be able to print them it will take some work to add supports in areas that overhang. Remember how the printer works. We will go over this some more next class.
  • Start thinking about what we can work on next. The ideas that I have planned include something that will be useful at school and also your own design.

Robotics 8B

  • Today you started working on a Scratch assignment that is all about you. The purpose of this is to have you start figuring out some of the tools. Below are the criteria for this. You will be given more time next class and I will also show you how to share it with me.
    • At least 3 things about yourself
    • At least one clickable thing
    • At least one movement
    • At least one sound
    • Another way of interacting with your presentation

Robotics 8C

  • Today you selected your project that you will likely be working on over the next three or four classes. Your choices are something of your own choosing, to complete the NXT Checklist, or else the obstacle course.

Robotics 9

  • Remember to finish the Codeacdamey HTML tutorials 6-13 for next class as you will be assessed on the skills and knowledge covered in them.
  • We also started looking at Scratch so you might want to take some time and play around with it. This was to give you a sense of what you are capable of doing and it is a great tool that you could use in some of your other classes.

September 30, October 1, & 2

Robotics 8A

  • Today you started designing a personal accessory such as a bracelet, ring, watch, etc in Sketchup. You will be given the double period to work on this next class and it will be due at the end of the day.
  • Remind me to show you the bell that I tried printing based on one of your designs and why it didn’t work.

Robotics 8B

  • You were assessed on the HTML tutorials 6-13. Most of you seemed to have the basic understanding though there were some areas that we need to focus on.
  • We started to play around with Scratch, and next class you will be given your first assignment in it. It would be helpful for you to sign up for an account. If you do remember to use your CBE email address and also use that as your name as we do not need to give out first and last name.

Robotics 8C

  • We continue working on the Mindstorm checklist. Most of you were able to get through the first stages though many of you struggled with programming the robot to go in a figure eight pattern. For next class I have asked you to come up with some ideas how you would like to approach your next project. They include continuing with the checklist, coming up with your own project, or going with one of the options I will present to you.
  • It has been awesome to see you working so well together

Robotics 9

  • We spent part of the class finishing the program a human assignment and handing it in. Make sure that you are keeping up with your work and coming prepared to class.
  • Work on the HTML tutorials from Code Academy. You will be questioned about tutorials 1-5 next class so make sure that you go through the tutorials carefully. If you are finished and would like to continue please fee free to do so.

September 25, 26, & 27

Robotics 8A

  • Make sure to have handed in your Duplicate Sketchup assignment by midnight tonight, Wednesday, September 25. Upload it to Google Drive and then share it with me ([email protected]). Please remember how I asked you to name the file “Name-Section-Assignment” so for example I would name my file “JeremyL-8A-Duplicate” This way it makes it easy for me to tell who you are, what section you are in, and also what you are handing in.

Robotics 8B

  • You wrote a little quiz today regarding the HTML tutorials that you did last class. We then continued by having you work on tutorials 6-13. I will provide another little quiz next class about the basics in these tutorials. I went over some of the areas that a number of you seemed to be having difficulty with during class so hopefully this heped. If you are stuck on something or unsure please just email me or come and talk to me and I will help you out.

Robotics 8C

  • We started to look at using the Mindstorm software to program the robots we are creating so that we can do more advanced tasks.
  • Think about how you will complete all of the tasks so that you can move on to the next level.

Robotics 9 A

  • Program a Human assignment is due mid next class. Please come prepared with a draft of it finished and I will give you time to make modifications and also test it on others. Once you have it polished off then please share it with me ([email protected]), you may want to wait until after you test this in the next class.

September 19, 23, & 24

Starting today, I am only going to post on Day 1 and Day 4 in the schedule, I will post for all three classes at each grade level during this time.

Robotics 8A

  • I was disappointed that very few of you brought in your objects to copy as well as rulers. This made it difficult for many of you to do your work and I feel loose focus. By the end of next class, you should have this finished and ready to hand in. I will also be taking a picture of the object that you used to base it on.

Robotics 8B

  • We are still trying to get things up and running so I appreciate your patience.
  • You should have handed in your “Program a Human” assignment today as you had two weeks to finish it, and I also gave you extra class time.
  • Work on the HTML tutorials from Code Academy. You will be questioned about tutorials 1-5 next class so make sure that you go through the tutorials carefully. If you are finished and would like to continue please fee free to do so.

Robotics 8C

  • Today you tried to create the fastest robot possible. Some of you were more successful than others. There were many designs but few of you thought about what you could do to make the robot faster. I am hoping to have the computers ready for next class so that we can start using them to do some more advanced programming.
  • For next class please make sure to complete your reflection. Think about your design. What work, what didn’t work, what would you change, what worked for others, why were some faster than others. If you would like to do this in Google Drive please remember to share it with [email protected].

Robotics 9

  • We will finish watching iRobot and then look at how to program a human. Keep thinking about the laws of robotics and how this might apply to the work you will be doing in class.

Wednesday, September 18

LifeSkills 9-21

  • Please remember to bring back your health/medical forms as they are due tomorrow.

Robotics 8C

  • We continued to look at how we can get an object to go in a straight line. Those groups that did not start off by planning and designing went back and started with this very important stage.

Robotics 9

  • We started to explore how we use robotics and examined the three laws of robotics as well.

Tuesday, September 17

Robotics 8B

  • Today we continued to work on the “Programming a Human” assignment and realized that it is not as simply as we first thought. Please make sure that you finish it for next class we will be testing them out and handing them in.
  • We also attempted to do the tutorials for Scratch. If you were away please go to the Scratch website and create an account. Use your CBE Google Email address for your username (example: [email protected] = username “jeremyl123”) One you create your account click on the “Create” button and follow the instructions.
