Thursday Dec 17 – Happy Holidays

Please be aware that students will be dismissed early tomorrow, Friday December 18, from school at 12:45. There will be no lunch break tomorrow because of the early dismissal.

I will do my best to finish marking the Memoirs, Discovery / Invention project, and Passionate Poetic Perspectives, as well as any other assignments that were handed in late over the holidays. I cannot promise when this will be done as I will be out of the city for much of the holiday season.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to contact me via emai and I will try to reply as soon as possible.

I would like to thank all of my students and their parents or guardians for making my first few months at Tom Baines amazing. The support and kind words I have received have made my transition here much smoother. It is nice to know that the work I do is appreciated.

I wish all of you a wonderful winter break. I hope that you are able to spend it with loved ones and that you get some rest and relaxation. See you all on Tuesday January 5, 2010 when school resumes.

8-CHA – Passionate Poetic Perspective

Your Passionate Poetic Perspective Project is due on Wednesday December 16 as we will begin presenting in class that day. Remember that this is basically a showcase or portfolio of your best work presented in a unique way. Below are the requirement and some tips to help you out.

Requirements:

  • Select 3 of your own poems and 1 poem written by someone else (could be from a classmate or a published poet)
  • For each of the poems choose a unique way of representing it (a perspective) in either a visual, kinesthetic, or auditory way
    • You must use all three forms of representing. Therefore, two of the forms will be used once whereas one of the forms will be used twice.
  • Create a chart showing: the name of the poem, what you will be doing to represent the poem, and which form you are using (visual, kinesthetic, or auditory)
    • Eg. (Under the Table, 3D model of a little table sitting on two of it legs under a larger table, visual)
  • Work on your representation / perspective for each of the poems
  • For each poem write a brief statement (about one paragraph) on how why you chose the perspective that you did and how this perspective fits with your poem. Remember to think about metaphors.
  • Come ready to present your Passionate Poetic Perspectives on Wednesday December 16.

Tips:

  • Think outside the box as often strange, weird, and unique are also the most interesting
  • Think about metaphors and how you can represent your poem in an abstract way
  • Think about the true meaning of your poem, what is it really about, its essence
  • Talk to me and work with me to improve on your ideas and work
  • Start now or else you will fall behind
  • Be creative and have fun what you are doing. You wrote some amazing poems so be proud to show them off.

Tuesday Dec 15

7-13

  • Continue brainstorming about characters, settings, and plot for the short story that we will be working on over the next while.
  • Make sure that your group is where it should be on the Canadian Documentary project. Make sure to always refer back to the assignment sheet so that you know if you are covering everything that you have to.
  • Remember about our gift story / exchange that will be taking place on Thursday December 17 for anyone that would like to participate. See yesterdays post for more information.

8-CHA

  • Passionate Poetic Perspective project is due tomorrow Wednesday December 16. We have been working on this for over two weeks now so there are no excuses for it not being finished. Remember that you will be presenting one of your perspectives in front of the class and two others for your smaller group. Please view the online information or the handout I gave you for all of the requirements, tips, and also the rubric.
  • Remember that your next Reading Response Journal is due the Wednesday that you return from Winter Break, Wednesday January 6.

Monday Dec 14

Marks have been updated with what had been handed in as of Friday December 11.

7-13

  • The class has decided to do a gift exchange in the form of a gift story. This way all of the students in 7-13 that would like to participate can and thus it is not mandatory. Please be remember that we have set the maximum at $10 and the minimum at $1. Also, the gift should be rather gender neutral if possible since with the gift story game you don’t know what you are getting until the end. This will take place at lunch on Thursday December 17th in Room 13. We will give you reminders throughout the week so make sure that you come prepared on Thursday.
  • Great job on the memoirs. I am still in the process of marking them and I will try to get the marks up as soon as I can. There are still a few students that have not uploaded their memoirs to D2L and therefore I can not put it up yet; however, there are roughly 25 memoirs up in D2L for you to listen to.
  • Continue thinking about the Canadian Documentary Project as it is a huge undertaking.

  • Continue thinking about the Canadian Documentary Project as it is a huge undertaking.

8-CHA

  • Great job in presenting your Invention / Discover projects today. I was really impressed overall with what I saw and heard.
  • Tomorrow you will have a double period to work on the Passionate Poetic Perspective project. It is due on Wednesday and you will be presenting some of your work so be ready. Make sure to look over the handout I gave you even though it is the same as the information that I put up on the website.

8-CHA – Renaissance Invention / Discovery Project

Due date has been changed as a result of inability to have access to technology and to give some of you a break. The new due date is Monday December 14.

Your Renaissance Invention / Discovery Project is due on Thursday December 10th as this is the day that you will be presenting. Remember that you are being given two days to complete part one. This means that you should be finished your research by Thursday December 3. You will then have four days to work on part two which is putting your work together to create a children’s book or some other work that is geared to a Grade 3 to 6 audience. Make sure that you look at the requirements, the entire assignment, and also the rubric so that you understand how you will be getting assessed.

7-13 – Memoirs

Please make sure that you have your first draft, second draft, personalized proof reading list, published / final copy, and the reflection of your memoir ready for Thursday December 10 as you will be handing them all in on this day.

However, before you hand them in you will be recording your memoir onto the computer and then uploading them into D2L. This way we have a record of the memoirs and you are able to hear all of the other memoirs from the students in the class.

We have been working on these since October so they should be in tip top shape and ready to go.

Wednesday Dec 9

7-13

  • Have your memoirs ready to go for tomorrow.
  • There were a few headaches today in creating the groups for the Documentary project but in the end I think everything will work out okay. Remember that even though this is a huge project and you are with a group the majority of the marks will be from your individual work on the project.

7-16

  • You asked me to select groups for you and then after the class decided you are not huge fans of my selections you attempted to make your own but in the end we went back to the ones that I made for you. Remember that even though the Documentary project is huge and it is a group project, the majority of the marks will be from your individual work on the project.

7-13 – Reading Response Journal

Remember that I am not interested in hearing about the story as I can read it myself. I would like you to talk about your opinoins of the story. This of course can be backed with evidence from the story or your life. Make sure to read the comments I have left on your response so that you can improve.

Please refer to your Reading & Writing Workshop duo-tang for further information on how to approach your Reading Response Journal. If you need help please come and see me well before the due date so that there is time for me to talk things over with you.
