Wednesday May 25

7-01 & 7-07

  • Tomorrow will be the last class time given to complete your short stories. Today you should have been finishing typing up your second draft or spending the time self editing or peer editing your short stories. Tomorrow we will continue this step though I would recommend using the time tomorrow to make any changes that were noted on your second draft. On Friday May 27 you will be handing in all of your planning (character questions, plot chart/outline/plan, anything else) and your first draft (rough copy) that has been edited and proofread, second draft (typed) that has been edited and proofread, and your published copy. Please remember to look at the rubrics and your workshop duo-tang for any guidance.
  • Please make sure that you have included the railway on your maps that connected Canada in 1885 (use pages 246 & 324). Please also include the main cities that the railway passed through. Be as accurate as possible and remember all that we discussed yesterday about how to properly complete a map.
  • I handed out you final Humanities project for the term. For tomorrow please come with an idea of which country you will be researching and also how you plan on sharing your immigration story. Starting Monday May 30 you will be given double periods to work on this. The due date is Friday June 3.

9-29

  • Today we spent the time writing a PAT Field Test. I have put your scored into D2L but please note that they are not being counted towards your mark. The purpose of doing the test was to give you experience doing a PAT and to let you see how the questions are worded and what is involved. As you can tell there was not a lot of regurgitation of information but you were expected to interpret and synthesize information. I hope that it is now more clear to you why I approached your Grade 9 Social Studies course the way I did. Remember, it is about how your apply your knowledge not just what you remembered.
  • I scored it out of 38 instead of 40 because there were two questions that I were worded awkwardly or did not make sense to me.
  • Once the real exam is written in June the province looks at the scores and determines what the “acceptable” range is as well as the “excellent” range. Therefore, you can get below 50% but still be considered within the acceptable range.
  • Based on percentage the class average was around 68% which I thought was impressive considering we spent no class time preparing for the exam and I am guessing that the majority of you did not spend time on your own really preparing for it either since you were just told about it a few days ago. I am sure that most of you will be able to improve your performance by reviewing the material before the test on Monday June 27.

Tuesday May 24

7-01 & 7-07

  • We spent a portion of today going over how to properly complete a map. I assumed that the students had been taught this in the past, and all of them should have, but based on the quality of the maps handed in we needed to revisit this.
  • We will begin a new Humanities project tomorrow. It will be the last project we complete before we begin the end of the year project.
  • 7-07 – Reading response journal entry is due tomorrow.

9-29

  • A reminder to look over the hand out I gave you about everything you need to know for the PAT. You will be taking a field test tomorrow as a way of starting to prepare you for the types of things you might see on the PAT. We do not find out the results of the PAT and they will not be counted towards anything. They are simply being done for practice.
  • We spent a great deal of time talking about a possible cure for cancer, the greediness of some corporations and people, psychology experiments, and the “end of the world.” All in all a pretty good day and some interesting conversation.

Monday May 23

Marks have been updated. I will try and finish marking reading response journals for 7-01 in the next few days.

Thursday May 19

Reminder that there is no school tomorrow or Monday so enjoy your four day weekend.

7-01 & 7-07

  • For Tuesday’s class please come with the second draft of your short story started. At this point you should have already written your rough (first) draft, proofread and edited it, and had at least one other person peer edit and proofread it for you. Your second draft should reflect the changes you wish to make. Next week we will finish typing your second draft, do another round of proofreading and editing and then make the necessary changes so we can get the published copies out. Your planning (character outline, plot graph/chart/outline, your drafts, and your published copy are all due on Friday May 27.

Wednesday May 18

7-01 & 7-07

  • I hope that all of you have been checking the homework blog so that you are aware of the due date for the next reading response journal. For 7-01 that was today.
  • Two drafts and published copy of short story are all due on Friday May 27. You will be given some class time next week to work on this but we can not afford to give you much. You should already have had your rough copy (first draft) edited and proofread by yourself and a peer. You will have some time to finish this tomorrow. For Tuesday’s class I am requesting that you make the required changes and type of your second draft. This way we can spend Tuesday and if needed some of Wednesday’s class proofreading and editing your work for a second time. This may be the last class time given for this.

Tuesday May 17

I hope that everything went well for everyone while I was gone and that all of you are caught up with your work. I have updated the majority of the marks online so I would recommend that you take a look. I will finish marking the Dragons’ Den project in the next few days when I look over the modifications you have made to your product/service and business.

Friday May 13

I will be away on Monday and Tuesday next week, and possibly Wednesday, as I am having some exploratory surgery done. You should all know what you have to do, how to behave, and what I expect from you while I am gone. Please make sure that you are a help not a hindrance while I am gone.

7-01 & 7-07

  • By the end of Tuesday’s class you need to edit and proofread your short story. After this we will be working on peer editing and proofreading a peers short story.
  • We will have our conference/debate/fight next week so please be ready for that

9-29

  • I hope you all did well on your Science test that you had today. Next week we are going to begin looking at quality of life, what this means to us, and the role of the government in this.

Wednesday May 11

Tomorrow is Tabloid Day so make sure that you are dressed for the weather as it is supposed to be warm. This means a hat, sunglasses, sun screen, and even longer sleeved items for the morning.

7-01 & 7-07

  • I know it seems like there is a whole bunch due on Friday but you have had three weeks to work on the draft of your short stories, the movie questions could have been done in class, and yes, the Debate/Conference research is now due for Friday May 13 too. Your group was to look at your province’s view on confederation (where they for it, against it, what did that want or not want, and why) and also how Confederation could solve some of the following problems
    • Railway debts
    • American military threat (Civil War, Fenian raids)
    • Political deadlock
    • Trade troubles (Corn Laws, issues with the US)
    • British Colonial Office opinions on the expense of the defence of BNA

9-29

  • What role should consumers play in our society? is due on Friday May 13. You were given about 40 minutes of class time and this should be ample to have completed a good portion of the assignment. Remember you choose how you use your class time.
