Tuesday November 6

  • November Scholastic Book Orders are due on Monday November 19.
  • Remember to check D2L for your online marks to see how you are doing, what you have done well on, where you need to improve, and what you have not handed in.

8-23

  • Continue to work on the Italian City States project. You should now know the city-state that you are representing and therefore, can continue moving forward.
  • Make sure that you are clear on the topic that you will be writing your persuasive essay on. You should also have the list of things that you would like to / need to find out about your topic.

9-27

  • Please make sure to have your parents call the school tomorrow if you are not coming to school tomorrow because you are going to work with your parents or if you are just choosing to stay home.
  • Continue to work on writing poems as you will soon be given the culminating project for this.
  • Please make sure that your Bill to Law Process activity is completed for tomorrow.

Robotics 9

  • It is great to see more of you enjoying working on designing, creating, appraising, and articulating on your “robots.” Remember that I have set things up so that groups can work at their own pace as some of you may rather design a couple of complex robots where as others of you may rather design numerous simpler robots. The only rule is that every time you start a new design you must go through the proper process. Also, you are now required to complete a self/peer evaluation each class and also a group work rubric.
  • Current Robotics Groups

Robotics 9

  • Hopefully you all had a chance to try doing some of the basic programming for the RCX systems. We will start delving into this a bit further in the coming classes as we work on the designing, creating, appraising, and articulating stages of the process.

Wednesday October 31

Happy Halloween

8-23

  • Remember your reading material for tomorrow.
  • We will try to finish the referencing work that we started earlier on in the week.

9-27

  • Captain Canuck project is due tomorrow. Remember to fill in the rest of your rubric as you will be handing it in with your project and I will be using it to assess you.

Tuesday October 30

8-23

  • Remember to dress up tomorrow and if you would like, we can still decorate and add more to our door / window display
  • Think about what we have talked about over the last few days regarding speaking and presenting skills as you prepare for your Science presentations tomorrow.

9-27

  • Continue to work on writing poetry.
  • Captain Canuck project is due Thursday November 1. Make sure to complete your rubric for this as each member will need to hand it in with the project.

Monday October 29

8-23

  • For tomorrow try and come up with some ideas about what makes a good presentation as I would like to discuss this before your Science presentation on Wednesday.
  • We will also finish the APA referencing piece tomorrow
  • Remember only 60% of you knew the names of all of the people in the class even though you have spent five periods a day for the last two months with these people. Start to get to know each other and if they have a sibling because on Monday, November 12 will be tested on this.

9-27

  • The due date for Captain Canuck project has been changed to Thursday November 1. Remember that you will need to complete and hand in your rubric as this is what I will use to assess you.
  • Continue to write poetry. It is amazing what some of you have already been able to do so now I just need more people to be confident and start sharing and showing off.
  • Remember only 57% of you knew the names of all of the people in the class even though you have spent five periods a day for the last two months with these people. Start to get to know each other and if they have a sibling because on Monday, November 12 will be tested on this.

Robotics 9

  • Next class you will be given time to finish the create portion of the assignment and then you will be asked to appraise by reflecting on the work you have done. We will also spend some time articulating by sharing what you have done and what you have learned with the rest of the groups in the class.

Wednesday October 24

I hope to see many of you for student led conferences over the next few days. Make sure that everyone gets lots of rest over your four day weekend.

Marks have been updated. Make sure to check these on a regular basis, especially after I hand something to ensure that everything is correct.

8-23

  • Thank you to the first group for bringing breakfast this morning. We had blueberry muffins, watermelon, bananas, and apple juice. Take a look at the Canada Food Guide to see how much of each food group you are eating every day.
  • Please finish finding the information for the referencing activity for Monday, October 29.

9-27

  • Continue to work on writing poetry at home and on your own time. Use the Poetic Devices hand out to help you with this.
  • You may need to spend some time working on your Captain Canuck project as well if you are behind.

Tuesday October 23

Student Led Conferences begin tomorrow. If you were not able to sign up but would still like to attend please email me and I can see when times are available for you to visit the classroom. Remember that they are student led and therefore, the student must attend.

8-23

  • Tomorrow is our first Lifeskill’s Breakfast Club. Please remember your items if tomorrow is your day (Akosha, Jacky, Jonny, Lamis, Nolan, Tara).
  • We began exploring what effective public speaking looks like  and also what makes a good presentation. Try to reflect on what we talked about today and see where you could improve.
  • We also started exploring information that is required to properly reference resources that you use.
  • Please bring in Halloween items to decorate our door and window for the contest. Think about how you can tie your items into your class name/theme.

9-27

  • We explored the idea that poetry is read in way that enhances the expression that the poet was trying to convey. We also looked at a number of examples from a spoken word festival.
  • Captain Canuck project is now due on Wednesday October 31. You will be given time tomorrow and on Monday to work on this. Remember to ask for help or clarification if or when something is not clear.

Monday October 22

Please remember that there is no school this Thursday or Friday because of Student Led Conferences. Please remember that this round of conferences are student led and not parent / teacher. This means that your child must attend as they will be discussing and showcasing their learning with you.

8-23

  • We finished the presentations today which was great to see. I will do my best to get these assessed and back to you.
  • We will begin working on our public speaking and presentation skills as well as exploring the world of APA referencing

9-27

  • Today we explored the world of “analogies” because after giving you the “What do you know about poetry?” quiz I realized that there were a number of missing items. This was also reflected in your editorial/political cartoons. Here is a link to some practice on analogies.
  • Tomorrow we will be discussing the due date for the Captain Canuck project as I think it will be changed to a later date to accomodate your learning needs.

Robotics

  • Please have the design process completed for the “mechanical item that solves a problem” for Monday October 29. Below are the steps of the design process incase you forgot
    • Think about the task (Create a mechanical item that solves a problem)
    • Write down the purpose (eg. Create something that moves forward in a straight line)
    • Come up with your concepts/ideas (Needs to be more than one)
    • Make sketches / drawings of your concepts from at least two different perspectives (top, side, bottom, etc)
    • Discuss the concepts with your group and select the one that is best suited to solvign your problem. Explain why you selected the concept that you do.
    • Once this is all done you can begin to build your concept.
