Friday February 10

If you are not clear about how the marks translate into learning then please take a look at the Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy images below and talk about them with your parents. If you have any further questions please make sure to talk to your teachers. A mark of “Satisfactory” or “C” means that you are doing well. It means that you are achieving a level that is expected at grade 8. Please use the table that is on the front of the report card and look at the wording that is used.

7-01

  • Please think about your thesis statements for Monday because we are going to continue working with these and have your turn them into something a bit more developed.
  • Remember to have your novels on Monday.

8-04

  • Excellent job today peer editing and proofreading. It was really cool to see everyone helping each other out. On Monday you will be creating your published copy of your essay. You will be given one period of class time to transform your second draft into your published copy. Everyone is due on Wednesday February 15.
  • Continue working on your timeline. You will be provided with one period on Monday & Tuesday, and two periods of time on Wednesday. Remember when the due date is for this.

Thursday February 9

I tried not to give anyone work tonight because of the dance. I hope that most of you are able to go and have some fun.

Report Cards were handed out today. Please focus on the comments that are provided and look at the legend on the front that has qualifiers for each of the assessment levels. I have also talked to the students about the revised Bloom’s Taxonomy and how their learning and assessment is reflected in this. I have included two easy to use charts below. Click on them to enlarge the image.

7-01

  • We started watching the CBC movie “The Rocket – Maurice Richard” and exploring thesis statements. Please try to remember to think about what you could have for your statement.

8-04

  • Remember to bring your printed second draft of your essay tomorrow so that you can have time to have someone help you with the proofreading and editing portion of the writing process.
  • Continue to work on your timeline. It is awesome to see you thinking, not just pretending to think, but actually thinking about how you can approach your timeline. We will work on this some more tomorrow.

Wednesday February 8

7-01

  • Today we began looking at how to create a thesis. Tomorrow we will continue looking at this and then how to support your ideas.
  • I really appreciate the effort that everyone is putting into the time that you are given in class.

8-04

  • Make sure that the second draft of your essay has been proofread and edited by yourself and at least two peers by Monday February 13. You will be given some more class time this week to finish it.
  • It is awesome to see some of you taking the time to actually “think” about your timelines, the ways you can represent the ideas present, and the connections that you are starting to make. Thinking is difficult and takes time. I hope you now understand why I try and provide as much time for you to work in class as possible.

Tuesday February 7

7-01

  • Today we continued to explore Canadian identity by focusing on stereotypes, generalizations, and racial tension that existed and continues to exist within Canada. We looked at the “Hockey Sweater” both in written and in visual form and talked about how French Speaking Canadians were being treated or thought about during the time of this story.
  • Thank you for bringing in your $5 bills to look at. Also take a look at your $10, $20, $50, and $100  bills as well as your Canadian coins to see what sort of symbols are present on them.
  • Please remember to bring in your novels tomorrow.

8-04

  • Tomorrow is the last day to bring back your field trip forms. If they are not brought back tomorrow then you will not be able to go as we have to book the seats at the theatre. A number of you have brought in forms but no money. Please remember to bring in the payments as soon as possible.
  • Please have a printed copy of the second draft of your persuasive essay so that we can continue with the writing process tomorrow.
  • Think about your timelines. You will be given one period of time each day this week and also likely one on Monday too. We discussed a reasonable due date and it was decided to make this Wednesday February 22.

Monday February 6

I will be putting in the February Scholastic Book order tomorrow. If you are interested please remember to bring in the order forms.

7-01

  • Sorry for the mix up about the Vertigo field trip posting I had up here as it is for the Grade 8 students.
  • Today we finished up our reflection about our own learning by using Inspiration. Please make sure that you have put it into the D2L drop box.
  • We also continued looking at Canadian Identity by examining Canadian symbols, generalizations, and stereotypes. Please remember to bring your $5 bill tomorrow.

8-04

  • Vertigo Field Trip forms are due on Wednesday February 8. If you do not get your form in by 4:00 on this day you will not be going on the field trip.
  • We spent two periods in the Learning Commons so that everyone had an opportunity to type up the second draft of the persuasive essay. If you have not finished please make sure that you do so and have it printed off for class on Wednesday February 8.
  • You were given the Time Line rubric. Please take a look over this and try to figure out your approach to this project. Will be given class time tomorrow to work on it and we can talk about a due date then as well.
  • Today we finished up our reflection about our own learning by using Inspiration. Please make sure that you have put it into the D2L drop box if you have not already done so.
  • Remember to bring your novels for tomorrow please.

Understanding Myself as a Learner Questions – You will given time to work on this tomorrow but I am asking that you hand it in then too.

  • How do I learn best?
  • What are my strengths?  What are my areas for growth?
  • What are the things that impact(effect) my learning and why? Eg (Noise level because I get distracted easily, how close I am to the front of the class because I have bad eye sight and need glasses, if I am tired because I can’t focus)
  • What structures/things do I need in order to learn best? Eg(Seating plan, assignments broken into smaller pieces, quieter spot to work)
  • What kinds of things am I involved in outside of school that impact my engagement in my learning?
  • What do I think others says about me? How have I been recognized?
  • What does success look like for me?  How will I know if I have been successful?

Tuesday January 31

Remember that tomorrow is the first day of the Second Semester. Please think about things that you would like to work on during this time to improve your learning experience.

7-01

  • Today we mixed things up a bit. I am trying to get all of my students to begin to figure out who they are as learners. This way they can start advocating for themselves and figuring out ways to improve their learning. To do this we are using “Inspiration”, a mind mapping/webbing program.
  • Please remember to have your novels with you tomorrow
  • Stamp project deadline has been extended until Monday February 6. However, you will only be given one or two more periods of class time to work on this.

8-04

  • Remember to have your first/rough draft self edited and proofread for tomorrow so that we can continue with the writing process.
  • We will continue working on the timelines tomorrow and I will do my best to finish compiling the rubric for you as well.

Monday January 30

There have been some concerns by a few students regarding the ability to catch up with their work. I would like to remind everyone that I update the online marks as soon as I have completed my assessment for each activity. I also make every attempt to record whether or not an assignment was handed in the day it is due and update the online marks to reflect this. It is the responsibility of the student to check their online marks and the homework blogs.

7-01

  • Stamp project deadline has been extended until Monday February 6. However, you will only be given one or two more periods of class time to work on this.
  • I am glad to see that the majority of you were able to hand in your letters today. I will do my best to have theses assessed and back to you within a reasonable amount of time. Please understand that I will be taking a closer look at your planning, first draft, second draft, and your published copy. All of this takes time especially when it is paired with a rubric that is unique for each of you based on who you completed it.

8-04

  • Textbook questions are due tomorrow, Tuesday January 31. Please see earlier posts to find the questions that are required to be completed if you have not already done so.
  • For Wednesday please come with the first/rough draft of your essay proofread and edited by yourself. We will be continuing the writing process on this day by having your peers proofread and edit your work as well.
  • We began looking at at timeline that conveys the essence of timelines but with a more modern twist. We will talk about this further tomorrow.
