Wednesday Feb 3

We are very fortunate to be hosting a Citizenship Ceremony at our school on February 10 to welcome roughly 85 new Canadians. A great deal of planning has gone into the ceremony to ensure that it is a wonderful and real learning experience for our Grade 9 students. We have also been given permission by Judge Way, the Citizenship Judge, and Ms. Lemieux, Citizenship Officer for Citizenship and Immigration Canada, to do a live broadcast of the ceremony onto our Pod televisions so that the whole school can witness this amazing event. We are also lucky to have representatives from all three levels of government as well as dignitaries from the Calgary Board of Education attending this event.

  • Get your field trip forms in. I need them by Friday Feb 5 to confirm how many students will be going. The field trip is on Thursday February 18.
  • Please make sure that you bring all required materials to start working on the making and constructing of your costumes, props, and backgrounds. Remember that everything should be well organized as you spent two classes putting your lists together. We will now spend the next week or two making what we need.
  • You do not need to bring any of your costumes or props that you have at home as we will not be filling for a while yet.
  • Your next reading response journal is not due until Wednesday February 24 because of the start of the term. However, you now have almost four weeks to complete it so I am expecting that it is of a high level.
  • Please come prepared tomorrow with your short stories as we will continue working on them.

  • It suprised me today how many of you do not enjoy reading. Personally, I think that this might be because you are not finding the right book to read. Please feel free to talk to me so that I can give you some suggestions. Also, look at the suggested books on our D2L shell and also the Graffiti door that is in my class with suggestions from 7-13 and 8-CHA. Remember you can borrow books from my class just ask me how to sign them out first.

7-13 – Reading Response

Remember that I am not interested in hearing about the story as I can read it myself. I would like you to talk about your opinoins of the story. This of course can be backed with evidence from the story or your life. Make sure to read the comments I have left on your response so that you can improve. You can now also see the comments that I have left for you by logging into your marks.

Please refer to your Reading & Writing Workshop duo-tang for further information on how to approach your Reading Response Journal. If you need help please come and see me well before the due date so that there is time for me to talk things over with you.

  • Most of the textbook questions that we started yesterday and continued today should be done for tomorrow. Part of this is to show you how much you should be able to get finished if you use your class time as effectively as you can. I will be having you complete a brief survey at the end of these questions as well to get a better idea of your learning and also so that you can see the reason that we do things in the class in a certain way.

8-CHA – Aztec Codex

Please make sure to look over the assignment sheet as well as the rubric for this project. We went over some of the art features and colours as well as some techniques on how to approach this assignment. It was up to you to ensure that you were using your class time appropriately and completing some of this work at home for homework. If you have any questions please make sure that you talk to me prior to the due date.
